Winter Offerings

"In the depth of winter, mother nature continues to present her offerings."

Debbie Lamey-MacDonald ©

This was another tiny bottle my mom bought for me at a local flea market. I loved its size and shape. I picked the fir sprig and rose hips while I was on my walk. Although sparse, still life subjects can still be found in nature during this cold season. I have to admit though, I am dreaming of days when the land will be filled with blooms and lushness again!

This was a different background color for me. At first I wasn't quite sure if I was going to like it, but once I started painting the fir and rose hips it seemed to make them pop. The warm tones against the cool seemed to be a nice combination.

Here are a couple of  photos of my studio set up and work in progress.

I have been spending some cozy time in my studio these days. Between winter storms and frigid days, it is a nice place to escape the reality of winter. I have begun to work on a larger painting that I started awhile ago, but didn't get to finish. It sure is a change going from a 4x4in. to 24x12in. surface. Wink, wink. It is enjoyable to get lost in a larger format again though.

Here is an in progress shot showing my reference material, plein air painting, digitals and also my color notes written on location. The location is Powell's Pt. Park--one of my favorite places to paint.

You can join me on Facebook where I often post in progress updates.

Wishing you a Wonderful Day!

Warmly,
Debbie

Christmas Spirit

"The joy of Christmas fills the air, with simple pleasures of baubles and fir. "

Debbie Lamey-MacDonald ©

I can't believe it is almost the end of November! Around this time of year, I get inspired to paint small miniatures of Christmas baubles. I love their colors and reflective nature! Do you like shiny ornaments? My mom says I'm just like a crow because I love shiny things. It is always fun to try to capture "the shine" in paint.

To show my appreciation and for fun, I thought I would have a little raffle. Join my Raffle Party for a chance to win a large magnet and two homemade floral note cards. I personally make these cards to have available when I write thank you notes etc. I think they offer a personal touch and are a way of spreading joy around. Soooo come join the fun and enter my little raffle!! Feel free to share with your friends and family! Cheers!

Warmly,
Debbie

A Touch of Elegance

"Basking in summer sunlight, wild roses add a touch of elegance."

Debbie Lamey-MacDonald

July 12, 2013
Plymouth, Nova Scotia.

3:30-7:00 p.m.

It was a beautiful day with comfortable temperatures. I was feeling especially productive today as I completed all my domestic chores. My house was looking tidy and sparkly clean. It was time to pull out my paints and be creative.

I wanted to stay close to home, so I decided to paint a still life in natural light on my back doorstep. Wild roses were on my mind. They would not last much longer and I knew where a beautiful patch lived not far from my home. So I got all my materials, easel etc. set up before I drove to the rose patch to get clippings.

 My subject --Wild Roses

I was feeling proud of myself on how organized I was: getting set up before I left, filling a small jar with water and even taking a glass of water and scissors with me for my clippings. When I arrived on site I was delighted to see a beautiful patch of roses. Just as I was about to wander into the bushes, I looked down at my feet and realized I had worn my flip flops instead of sneakers! So much for being totally organized. Wink, Wink. Flip flops were not the best footwear for treading amongst rose bushes. At any rate, I did manage to retrieve a few nice clippings.

In Progress

Once I had my clippings in my jar, all was a go. I had the green light and began my painting session. I wanted to create a bit of a dreamy feel, thus I took care to not use too many hard edges. I loved the rose colors, lighting and the shadow cast on the table top. It was getting late in the day, so I knew my light would be changing soon. In the end I did have to rely on visual memory. By the time I was finished painting, the evening was upon me and the light had definitely changed.

Warmly,
Debbie

P.S. The bottle I used in my still life was saved from a small jar of apple/raspberry jelly I gave my son for Christmas in his stocking. When I was washing it I thought it would make a great prop for still life set ups. I cheerfully added it to my still life collection. Still life artists are always on the hunt for items they think might come to life in paint someday!

P.P.S. Painting outside is so refreshing--not only is the light beautiful, but the sounds of nature are very soothing.

Charming in Pink

"With long lasting blooms and pink ruffles; carnations possess a charming allure. "

Debbie Lamey-MacDonald

My Subject

I love the delicate look of carnations with their frilly edges and most importantly their longevity. I often take them home from the super market to add a burst of life to our home, especially in the midst of winter when I am longing for lushness again! This bunch had a delightful clove scent and variegated petals that stayed in bloom for over a week!

Did you know that carnations became the official flower for Mother's Day in the early 20th century? Their botanical name literally translates to the "flower of the gods" or the "flower of love." This little miniature would make a unique gift to celebrate someone special in your life on Mother's Day!

Do you have a special flower you like to bring inside your home to add a cheery note? Feel free to share an interesting fact about your favourite flower.

Warmly,
Debbie
