Coming to Life

After a harsh winter, mother nature is finally coming to life. Oh how I have missed the sounds of nature and fresh greens. New leaves rustle gently in the warm breeze, while birds sing their songs of praise. 

An elegant birch has weathered winter's woes. It stretches its branches beyond its core. Happily, it sways in the airy space, as it births new foliage. 

There is an easy flow in the park. One that slows down man-made time and envelops the viewers spirit. Nothing else matters---only a present moment. Mind chatter fades into the distance.

Powell's Pt. Park, Nova Scotia.

This was the first plein air painting of the season I did when Spring arrived.  It was so thrilling to finally have fine weather and be back out on location. I love being alone in the park. I can feel every sinew of my body relax. 

I noticed I was slower painting during this session, as I warmed up to painting on location again. Painting outdoors has a rhythm of its own. In some ways its like a moving target. lol The light changes, movement occurs and decisions must be made in a timely manner. However, I love the feeling of having all my senses engaged. It is a bit like a dance--joyful and with spontaneity. 

This was my first Spring to be working at my art full time since I retired last year.  It is thrilling to be able to observe and enjoy nature on a daily basis!

Touched by Color

It is a very warm September morning. We have been blessed with a beautiful weekend forecast. Foliage in the park has been touched with nature's brilliant array of colors. It is apparent that autumn has arrived. 

This morning, I am struck by the drama of light and shadow. Bright colors come alive as the sun makes its journey higher into the clear blue. Geese noisily honk from the ocean, as they bobble along on the waves; while tall grasses rustle about as the breeze tosses them to and fro. Nature is alive and active this morning!

The light is changing quickly. Paint and observations must be made without pause. A record of time recorded; a moment in time lived.  An experience that will not be forgotten after winter's cold hand sweeps over the land.

I spent a great portion of my day in the park, scouting around for future painting spots and painting. The park is really abundant with autumn colors.  I found a secluded spot just off the beach and around a bent in a marshy area. It was a good job I didn't set up my easel where I initially was going to, as by the time I finished painting, the tide had come in and that area was covered with water.

I loved nature's activity today; seagulls feasting on the sandbars and geese honking and floating on the ocean! There were not many people in the park today, just the occasional walker out for their morning stroll. 

It was nice to have my husband join me after I had been painting for awhile. I forgot my camera card so he took that, along with lunch for me! We really enjoyed the peacefulness and warm temperatures. It won't be long and the park will be closed. If I want to paint here I will have quite a hike with my gear, as the places I like to paint are a distance from the gate. Staying in shape is a must for a plein air artist!

A Burst of Light

This was one of those paintings that if you did too much monkeying around you would loose the spontaneity and freshness! I had to make sure I tossed my brush aside when I had the affect I was looking for; it would have been easy to add one brush stroke too many.

My Set Up

It was so quiet in the park the night I painted this, you could hear people's footsteps before I actually saw them. I love how dramatic and moody the skies get this time of year. It is breathtaking when the sunlight bursts through towards the end of the day.

When I first arrived to paint, an eagle flew so close to me I could see him perfectly. You could hear his wings swooshing through the air. What an amazing looking bird!

Autumn Approaches

I cannot believe how quickly reds and browns are making their way into summer's green palette. The park is showing signs of autumn's inevitable arrival. Warm sunny days are now numbered, as we make our way through September. 

I loved this high perch I painted from which overlooked the sandbar and ocean beyond. I was drawn to the little house in the distance with its red roof gleaming in the morning sunlight. Seagulls were busily cracking shells as they feasted on the many delights the sandbars offered. They soared continuously in the air and floated happily on shallow waters. 

The park continues to receive many visitors. Everyone is making sure they absorb as much of the park as they can before it closes in mid October. Oh how time marches on! Seize the moment while you can!

Super Moon

I painted this one on the same night as I painted "The Night of the Super Moon" . It was an exceptionally calm and beautiful evening in the park. I almost missed painting this one, as my gear was pretty much packed up when I turned around and saw this huge bright moon. It felt surreal to witness such an amazing sight.

I thought that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity and that I shouldn't let it pass by. So I worked quickly, (basically in the dark) to capture the essence of my subject. I especially loved the turquoise blue and pink sky colors. They reminded me of the rainbow popsicles we use to eat as children. 

By the time I left the park, it was dark and the moon shone brightly on the calm ocean. It was breathtaking. A moment in time I will not forget!

P.S. I am in a cottage on Farm Lake as I write this post. Yesterday, I was able to paint a miniature of the Atlantic Ocean. I was the only one on the beach at Tor Bay. I loved sitting high up on a sandy hill nestled amongst the dune grass! Today it is raining heavily--although I can't paint on location it sure is cozy relaxing with a wood heat going and listening/watching the rain on the lake. I'm crossing my fingers the sun will come out this afternoon. 

( I missed yesterday's post for the 30 day painting challenge, due to my travels and not having a quality photo of "Super Moon". I'm still hoping to get 30 done, I just might be off by one or two days. )

The Night of the Super Moon

The park is exceptionally quiet this evening. The lowering sun casts a golden glow upon the land. It is an enchanting evening, especially tonight as the super moon is scheduled to make its appearance. 

As the evening progresses, layers must be donned. The night brings crisp autumn air, creating a chill and the knowledge that soon colder days will be upon us. 

Once the land was recorded with paint, the Super Moon made its grand appearance! It shone  brightly like a huge globe in a pinkish sky. Its beauty was beyond words; causing  an awe inspiring appreciation for nature and her marvels. 

Tonight nature humbles her viewer with her grandeur. She has gifted one with yet another orchestration of beauty. It is an honor to witness her offering!

It was such a beautiful evening in Powell's Pt. Park when I painted this one. Witnessing the Super Harvest Moon when I was just finishing my painting was beyond words. I literally gasped when I turned around and saw that huge glowing globe in the sky!

 I immediately unpacked some of my gear again and quickly recorded the essence of the moon on a miniature painting. I just have to do some tweaking on it and will post it soon as well. 

Nature's beauty never seizes to amaze me. Being witness and experiencing her beauty on location is a wonderful gift. I will never grow tired of trying to capture her beauty in paint. Definitely a humbling experience!

I hope you have a chance to absorb some of nature's beauty this weekend! Take a few moments to pause and acknowledge your natural surroundings. You might be surprised what see and feel.

I am totally in love with wild rose bushes! Every year when they arrive I am delighted and can't wait to paint them. I painted these in one of my favorite locations, Powell's Pt. Park. It is close to the ocean so I get great pleasure in seeing the water and listening to all of nature's sounds while I paint!

Like yesterday's post, I have included a picture of what this small painting looks like on a miniature easel. The  easel is included with the painting when purchased. These little miniatures make great gifts for birthdays, Christmas, weddings etc. Many collectors have bought them as a unique gift instead of  big box store gifts. 

Here is a picture displaying the actual width of the boards. They are awesome boards--so nice to paint on. Mine are linen covered. I purchase them from this company which provides excellent service!

Powell's Pt. Park, Nova Scotia. 

9:45-12:15 p.m.

The park was so gentle when I arrived this morning. Only a whisper of a breeze and beauty all around. My love affair with wild rose bushes continues. Once again I am determined to paint them at the height of their beauty. Their femininity, hue and cheerful nature are always captivating. How could one resist them?

After scouting around the park, I find the perfect spot. Today I am most comfortable as I park myself at a weathered picnic table. I enjoy the novelty of having my belongings easily accessible, as I spread them out around me. 

 My Subject--Love these wild rose bushes!

Once my surface is toned, the dance begins. Only thoughts of paint and brush strokes prevail. It is the sounds of nature and motion of the brush that gently guides one into a meditative state. It is the best medicine for the soul!

Today I played with a variety of grays. Both the colors and light are soft this morning. Mauves and grays stroke limbs and water. I make new color discoveries that would only happen from direct observation of nature. 

While I write my reflection a special visitor arrives. A little squirrel is looking for tidbits of my snack. He is cautiously playful as he scampers around my feet. To his delight, I toss little pieces of cookie and bread sticks. Suddenly he bumps into my bare feet, startling both of us!

As I pack up to leave, butterflies flit in and out of the rose bushes. The light has shifted. New shadows appear. The scene has changed since I first arrived. I leave contented and grateful for my visit today.

P.S. While I fed my little squirrel friend, a blue jay flew in  bedside us. He quickly retreated when he realized I was in close proximity. I was able to grab my camera and take a few shots of him before he continued on.

Nature’s Whispers

The park is so calm today. I almost feel like I am in heaven. Not a soul in sight, just the rhythm of paint and brushes in motion. Breezes arise intermittently causing foliage to rustle and sway. Pink roses skip about within the gentle movement. 

A calmness prevails. It is like time has stood still as a meditative state begins. Nature gently cradles the soul with her quiet whispers and beauty.

This was a painting I completed a few weeks ago in the park when the wild rose bushes were in bloom. I am always so thrilled to witness their beauty and never tire of them. My written reflections are written after I complete my painting. I often take a snack and hot tea to drink while I write. I love this reflective time, writing and listening to nature!

Diary of a Plein Air Painter #27

Cheery Hello!

It has been awhile since I posted to this blog. So much has happened in my life since my last post! In June I retired from teaching elementary school after 32 years of service. Soooo I am now a full time artist! WooHoo! You will definitely be hearing more from me in the near future. I thought I would begin posting again with a "Plein Air Diary" post.  I am really enjoying being back out on location!

Powell's Pt. Park, Nova Scotia.

10:45-12:00 p.m.

Oh, how I missed painting on location. Life's responsibilities and happenings have kept me away too long. It was a pleasure to be immersed in nature once again today. 

I returned to Powell's Pt. Park, one of my favorite locations to paint. I was thrilled to discover that the wild rose bushes were in full bloom. I scouted about looking at various clumps of roses. I love how both light and shadow make them come alive. 

After much debate, I finally decided upon a section of rose bushes that caught my eye. They danced merrily in a light breeze. A beautiful view of the ocean gave my eyes an enjoyable break as I painted. 

Luckily, I found a cozy shaded spot to sit while I painted. Nature hummed and bustled around me. Visitors came to walk their dogs and I enjoyed little chats with them. It is always so interesting to meet new people and hear their stories.

I decided to make a miniature painting as the light was beginning to change due to all my little conversations with visitors. I had a really enjoyable session and look forward to my return soon.

P.S. I had a lovely conversation with a lady who was walking her two dogs. At one point in our talk, we discussed how important it was to find a creative outlet that eased the stress of everyday living. I feel very grateful for my art and nature!

P.P.S I also met a sweet young lady who just moved to our area from British Columbia. She came to work as a nurse at our local hospital. A profession I have great respect for. When you have an ill family member, their kindness is so appreciated!
